Last night, I finally made the switch from Reddit to Lemmy. Honestly it was something I should have done a long time ago. I’d been hearing about Lemmy for a while, but I kept brushing it off because it seemed complicated or too niche or too techy. But after one too many encounters with power-hungry mods, desperate upvote chasers, and a flood of obvious bots, I hit my breaking point. I actually ended up learning more about Lemmy from people venting on Reddit itself, which was kind of ironic!!

I set up an account here, took a last look around Reddit, and bailed. Reddit used to feel like a genuine community, but now it’s just a money-hungry platform, clearly trying to squeeze out every dollar as it spirals down. Lemmy might be new to me, but at least here, it feels like voices still matter. I know you guys already know this, but I want to throw it out there: You all are right!

Just wanted to let you know you’re wrong, and that your fetish for fascist father figures will only result in you consistently disappointing everyone around you. Your ideology is backwards and antithetical to basic empathy. Welcome to Lemmy.

Replied to the top comment here just so others know what they’re getting into with @I Voted For Goldwater

OP started a Lemmy Community with, I’ll say, a divisive subject. I did ask for clarification on their position:

I never once insulted them, only asked for more information on their position. This went on cordially for 4 or 5 exchanges, and then I returned and found this:

I wonder if Lemmy.world is interested in supporting a community that actually isn’t interested in any posts from Lemmy.world users.

If you choose to engage with @I Voted For Goldwater, you should expect the same.

Yeah man the apps are tight and I still get the most important news. The community is the kinda weirdos I like - Linux nerds, oss purists, cutting edge. I haven’t missed reddit in the last ~year of lemmy

I just don’t get why people want to use social media for relentlessly spreading and talking about news or politics. I go online to escape reality / normies and their endless petty rage and negativity and self loathing. Is nowhere sacred?!

I think you may be mistaking hatred of Trump with fervor for Harris.

I’m not thrilled with Harris, but if it’s going to be between her and that orange shitstain, it’s an easy choice.

Say anything about her less than favorable on news and politics subs and watch the downvotes.

That is not organic behaviour imho

I’ve found that out. I started a Trump community today and I’ve already had to block two people! but I think Lemmy has room for some other voices than just lefty. i hope.

There are other instances that align better with your views than lemmy.world
Of course, they’re all defederated by most others, for good reason.

Trump is a fascist, and anyone in favor of Trump, too.

I don’t think you’re gonna find much support on Lemmy for that. The kind of people on Lemmy are the kind of people that read books and tend to skew more to the intellectual side, even the ones I don’t agree with. Generally that doesn’t really describe Trump supporters.

Goodluck, you will very likely get downvoted because there’s a lot of lefties here but downvotes don’t fuck your account up like they do on reddit so don’t worry to much about them. Your posts will still showup and be seen.

While i dont supoort either puppet. We do need some trump idiots to balance this place out. Endless kamala shilling is tiring.

We had a guy try to run conservative sub it just got turned into him getting brigaded and abused. Not usre if thats still around.

But if people want to discuss their shiti politics in good faith, then fedi must be able to accommodate everyone if it is to become defacto internet front page.

Fuck reddit. Only decentralized social media makes sense since companies cant be trusted.

I did notice that the c/republican sub has no mod and that the c/conservative one seems to be filled with pro-democrats people who just downvote every post that’s not pro-dem lol i think there’s room for more voices. We’ll see.

More power to you, maybe some closeted conservatives will come out. Pretty sure the linux subs got them lol

Either way. There is room for everybody and dnc zealots chasing people is annoying.

Normally I welcome people with different opinions, but I truly believe that people still following Trump are absolutely in the wrong. He is a foul, broken, weird human, and his goals are to fuck up all of our lives (yes, yours too) so that he and a dozen others can have money and power. This is as clear, proven, and obvious as it is reading the history books about prior dictators, so I have zero sympathy or respect for seemingly intelligent people who still support him.

So uh, welcome I guess, you do you, but I don’t think we are gonna be your crowd.

Welcome. The biggest difference for me after moving is trying to contribute. Find something you like and share it don’t worry to much about what community it goes it. We have less people so sharing and commenting is more important here.

If you want you find communities (subreddits) then you can use https://lemmyverse.net

Block people you don’t like because they will drive you insane if you let then.

Another cool thing about Lemmy is that we have a public modlog so you can see what comments are being removed and why. Very useful when you see someone whining about a post being removed unfairly since you can checkout the post and see for yourself.

I did find that out already. Geez! I’m assuming since this space is a bet more techy, maybe more neurodiversity is represented here? Because oh man, I’ve been on for less than a day and I already had to block two people who just wouldn’t stop or get the context! lol Still like the vibes here more than reddit though.

I was going to say that the lil dude just got here, and should probably just shred the reddit trolling-for-karma mentality … then I saw their posting history. Maybe they’ll get the message when all their posts are below -80.

I don’t know if Lemmy’s the future, but even if it’s not, Reddit’s the past. This place seems like the best bet at being the future right now.
