Props to the mods over there!
Not gonna link the names, but for real, these guys belong in some kind of hall of fame. Stay strong, fuck /u/spez.
edit for future people: It looks like the android subreddit made a whole server! It can be found here: https://lemdro.id/
Still super shitty that sync for reddit is vanishing soon. While it’s great that apparently it’s getting re-leveraged as a fediverse reader, still amazed at how poorly this API transition happened because Spez wants to be a knob
In case you’re stuck on Reddit, the Revanced Team decompiled the APK and made a version of Sync that lets you use your own API key. I’m not sure how well that will work, but I’m definitely going to try it out after The Final Day
It would be better if people switch to another platform instead of keeping supporting reddit.
Got a link? Or is it just a patch on ReVanced manager?
It’s just a patch in the Manager. You may need to download the free version APK from somewhere like APKMirror and patch that though (you can also disable ads so it’s like the Pro version), as there don’t seem to be any Pro APKs and you can’t patch an installed app without root.
I’m gonna hold off on this, since one of the steps involves making your own “app” in Reddit’s interface that’s tied to your user account. If Reddit’s admins consider bypassing the API shit this way to be a violation of TOS, that’s a can of worms I don’t feel like opening just yet.
I was hoping it’d be like Twidere for Twitter, which uses the client ID and secret of the official iPhone app.
Aw yus, that’s exactly what I wanted to hear. When I heard that they didn’t want to change the app to allow you to use your own API key I was scratching my head wondering why, I could exist under that daily API rate.
I might give it a go
I may be wrong but in one of the threads it was said that App Developers allowing users to use their own API Key was also against the agreement
Yeah, but it’s not the developer doing it, it’s a 3rd party who took apart the app and let YOU modify it.
Does that mean Reddit will be sending us fat API bills for using our own API key?
Yesn’t. If you use it barely then no, those bills will be tiny. If you are a poweruser, it’ll get expensive quickly.
They don’t have a payment method for me, so gl getting me to pay that bill, anyways. I think I’d rather go to collections than give Reddit a dime.
How do you think you will get an API key without a payment method established?
idk, but somehow I did
