A suburban Detroit judge is no longer handling cases after a court official turned over recordings of her making anti-gay insults and referring to Black people as lazy.
Oakland County Probate Judge Kathleen Ryan was removed from her docket on Aug. 27 for unspecified misconduct. Now the court’s administrator has stepped forward to say he blew the whistle on her, secretly recording their phone calls.
“I just want to make it right. … I want to keep my job and do it in peace,” Edward Hutton told WXYZ-TV. “And I want the people in Oakland County that come to court to get a fair shake, to have their day in court, to have an unbiased trier of fact.”
Respect to Hutton for stepping forward and pushing back against bigotry.
Lower courts held to a higher standard than the Supreme Court. How fun for us.

The Probate Division manages decedents’ estates, trusts, guardianship of minors, and conservatorship of adults who are unable to provide for their personal needs or manage their financial resources.

That’s hard to hold personal biases after seeing all kinds of people doing shitty things. It’s natural for us to form them as we optinize our workflow, right, but toward such general groups like The Blacks © and The Gays ™? She inherited them and consciously kept them in her. I don’t know how it affected her judgement in court, but at the very least saying stuff like that doesn’t sit right with her job, even if it’s said in person. It’s like a surgeon telling an anecdote of them not washing hands after using a toilet.
