I think phones have generally taken over MP3 players because you can do everything an MP3 player does on your phone.
But I recently bought one because I just like a single device having that unique purpose of playing music.

If there’s something that can scrobble, I’d gladly switch to a MP3 player.
i’m shopping for mp3 players for precisely this reason - a friend has an ipod touch that abruptly stopped scrobbling. the last.fm app is stuck in a loop sucking battery. and she needs bluetooth anyway. she has always kept music and phone separate but now we have to ask the five whys on that before getting her a new unfamiliar gadget.
Back in the day I think it was either Rhythmbox or gtkpod that synced my scrobbles each time I connected my iPod to my PC. Not sure if any other device is “smart” enough to do that.
