I want to give something back to the community and I was wondering if there was any way to share a file (to pirates) so that it won’t be traced back to me? What precautions should I take? Is there metadata attached to the file? How does your computer remember a modification date and date create, is it embedded into it?

I am talking about audiobooks btw, I have downloaded a ton of audiobooks and I want to send it somewhere where others can download it for free after an internet search. So yeah, I do want to make it untraceable. But for this scenario, you are free to assume that I have the nuclear codes or a new virus genome (I wonder which one is deadlier)

There are tools for stripping metadata, vpn and tech like tor to obfuscate your connection.

Can’t really say which torrent platform is best to distribute anonymously.

Get rid of the metadata, there are programs for that but I don’t know any of them. Share the file using OnionShare.

      +1 for Onionshare.

If you’re just giving it to just one person, send it this way. If you wanted to be extra safe (after stripping metadata), you could even encrypt it using their public key first so that it’s unclear what the data is before you give it to them.

In you case i would use i2p, create a torrent in i2psnark and the upload it to the postman.i2p tracker.

Another though less safe option is to just use a VPN with a kill switch and upload it to a public tracker with throwaway info.

Also be sure to check the metadata of the file in case some program you use adds information you didn’t intend.

I’d recommend against that to be honest . They are good folks trying to protect activists and free speech and having the media titans on their door will hurt them and their users. They run on donations as far as I know . They are in no position to fight a costly lawsuit and it puts the existing users at risk too.

That being said I appreciate the contribution and you bringing awareness of the riseup collective to others.

With that i2p option. Would it be sharable with people using non-i2p connections?

Depends on the setup. If you use a client that is strictly i2p such as i2p snark then you would only share to other i2p peers but if you were using a client that shared to both i2p and clearnet then It would work but you would need a VPN for your clearnet traffic.

It is a more complex setup in that case. I would suggest to just use one or the other to keep it simple. At the end of the day if we’re talking about filesharing and not robbing the Louvre or government leaks then a VPN or i2p is sufficient.

But, if I use a i2p only client and someone who has a client that does both leeches then they would seed to the clearnet too right?

That’s what someone who has these things would say. 🤔 👀

what you work for the government or something? It’s pretty easy to get the genome of Covid right now. It’s open source I think. I can see the future of terrorism from here. Vertasium or Vsauce has a nice video on this.
