So is Lemmy the dumping ground for people getting banned on reddit now?
Honestly that’s how I got here lol.
Tried it out when the API changes were announced, but let’s be real, Lemmy doesn’t have as much content or user interaction.
It’s allowed me to stop doom scrolling as much, but I do miss some niche communities
Odd since it’s arguably just as easy to make a new reddit account
I think it’s more like getting used to the freedoms of Lemmy increases the likelihood of popping up on the radar of some dubious Reddit admins.
Can we talk about how screwed up that streak notification is? Let’s encourage people who show signs of unhealthy usage of the platform to further their addiction?
You have a 300 day streak of using heroin, don’t stop now!
people who show signs of unhealthy usage of the platform
Hey! (You’re absolutely right)
Exactly like my account except 30ish days ago. Welcome to Lemmy! If you’re reading this comment the ban bots haven’t taken over:
Luigi Mangione Innocent Death Elon Musk Trump
Reddit bans you again in absentia
These days both Twitter and Reddit have wacky UI messages written by completely different teams. One team is all business-like as in “Here’s some stern warnings you’re not going to like.” The other team is all casual and wayyy too friendly and fellow-kidsy, like “Did someone say MEMES?” (to which most reasonable people respond “fuck you Elon/Spez, you’re not funny”)
Reddit banned all the people that made it fun, now the only people left are the boring ones and bots lol
And porn
and not any of the fun porn like the stuff made out of bad taxidermy
I got banned for pointing out that ICE are a human trafficking terrorist gang
They ban facts now? Wow what a dump, I hope everyone that works there is time-teleported into an Auschwitz shower in 1944.
If you ever wonder why nobody calls it terrorism when America does it, it is because people are not allowed to do so.
Reading all these ban stories, I’m glad I left during the API thing! I don’t like censoring myself.
It’s a bot farm.
Everything is just rage bait
Yeah, can’t just hang out over there being a decent human being, they want to the the new compliment to X
Hello everyone. You’re not alone. I got banned like for 4-5 times, using local Ukrainian words that may look like slurs, but they aren’t.
I got unbanned, but I am still too scared to write anything about politics on Reddit. I want a working account there for IT questions.
Make another account then. I have a shit posting account for making comments I know will be dicey. Reddit mods are fat slobs don’t let them stop you from living your dreams.
My solution is to browse subreddits without signing in so whenever I go to up vote or down vote anything I can’t and think, “oh right,” then go back to Lemmy (which is quickly becoming a higher quality experience anyways).
they will detect your alternate account through fingerprinting you
it’s where I am currently, unable to use any of my 100% wholesome and positively contributing accounts because I shared the opinion of “Oh no, anyways” on a burning Tesla dealership post, got banned from world news with no explanation, asked for elaboration and did not receive it, and then continued to post in that sub with another account.
did I ban evade? yes. did I first attempt to find out why I was banned? yes. was I ignored and thus continued to participate with other accounts, being careful to say nothing even close to provocative with those accounts? yes.
didn’t matter. they identified it as the same account, they banned it.
I’ve been treated the same way, lost about 7 accounts each over 12 years old because some mod didn’t like me telling off an incel and from there sent it to admins and from there it’s been repeated bans and shadowbans.
I am done with reddit, I’ve seen behind the curtain in my time there, I know how bad it really is. The whole platform is now an AI training-bed and in some communities more than half the users appear to be bots. Very clever, very well-disguised, but you can tell if you check their history. They want to be able to control large-scale narratives and it’s working.
But if anyone wants to try to keep fighting the bot army, you can create a new account by deleting all your reddit cookies and browsing history, resetting your modem for a minute, then making a new account with a new email. (Use Gmail or another name-brand on, they now shadowban accounts made from disposable emails.)
Also, do not use a VPN ever. Instant permanent shadowban, and you have to start all over.
From there you just need to establish some karma history so you can post. Memes and other content-grind subreddits let even new accounts last I checked.
If you don’t want your account banned immediately, do not make political opinions, do not argue with anyone, do not sass reddit even through they deserve far worse. Don’t reply to yourself or your alt accounts, they can now tell immediately. Do not report anyone, they now will use reporting as an excuse to ban you if they decide they don’t like you.
Reddit mods are fat slobs who can be easily duped, but Reddit algorithims will autoban you for making new accounts.
I’m basically exiled from it until I decide to get a new device and sign in on a new network other than my home or my work.
they keep banning any other accounts I made there over being linked with the first one. I have tried unique email addresses and everything but they still figure it out within 24 hours, even when I 'm not allowed to post anything. So I just dont use reddit at all anymore.
Burn all your tracking cookies associated with reddit, kill all your browsing history, then reset your router for a minute, then use a fresh e-mail and not a disposable one to register a new account. Using a VPN will also get you insta-flagged.
Keep in mind most subs will not let you comment or post without a karma history, find some large meme subs that let new accounts post and just say bland shit for a day.
you probably need to use a new device and on a network you havent frequently used. Unique email addresses dont mean anything if you’re logging in with the same browser with the same cookies and “digital footprint”
Luckily, I’ve never had issues with reddit mods, but I received a f*ck ton of global bans on r/reddit_ukr (getting carpet bombed by russian bots and the half of the comments are [deleted])
It’s the time to discover the fediverse ig. Btw any ideas where I can dump a ton of random IT memes?
I guess my advice wasn’t anygood, hardware bans and ip can go in effect if you get banned. I love Lemmy, but this community is still a young, subs for a lot of niche hobbies and shit posting dont really exist…yet.
I use voyager and kept scrolling through the reconmended sub’s list until I found something I was looking for. The search feature is hit or miss, I didnt find anything for IT memes.
I haven’t really checked this site out in a long time, but I found it helpful in the past: https://lemmyverse.net/communities
I’ve had my reddit account for 17 years and I received my first warning for inciting violence because I commented “this makes me want to make a whip and go to town on these people” (a reference to Jesus running out the money changers in the temple) on a video of a megachurch service showing a woman painting trump bowing to a cross.
I got banned for saying people should engage in mass protest against the arrest of judges and prevent anyone from entering and leaving the building in which they are held until they are released.
I’ll create a new Reddit account when I can be bothered to create a new email address.
What were you banned for?
I suggested someone add an icon of torches and pitchforks to an email they were sending to company to complain.
Banned for inciting violence.
It’s nuts, but once I learned that it was just an LLM doing content moderation (and probably the appeals, too), things made a lot more sense.
Spez is the exact kind of guy who would believe that community moderation is an “unsolved problem” and not, y’know, perfectly solvable by the same ol’: ya hire people to do it.
I got banned after 15 years for asking why we can’t organize to cyberbully Trump’s current head of social media: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_Cheung_(political_advisor)?wprov=sfla1
This was in response to the White House calling Garcia a terrorist on their Twitter account.
I was ahead of the curve, and got banned in October 2024 for Promoting violence when I said “If a president decided to betray America’s allies, and start directley helping Russia in its wars of conquest, America would probably end up with a dead president”
They basically told me to fuck off on my appeal, I had told them A) I wasnt threatening anything, and B) moderation is getting politically triggered and biased. and they permabanned me.
and I have since been Hardware banned from my main PC and my work PC, I still want to go back for some of the niche communities that havent emigrated over here yet, but I really cant be bothered to go and fire up a 8 year old laptop or something just for fucking reddit. its a cesspit and getting banned is largely a blessing in disguise.
Since when does reddit take a hash of your hardware?
that part of my statement wasnt based in anything I know for certain, I see it mentioned a lot, I know they’re doing something with algorithms that auto-ban suspected accounts,
I wouldnt put it past them however. while I think my phone is comprimised anyway and unsuitable for going back to Reddit, I know that one way to get hardware id’d for good. is by installing that stupid reddit app, which I wont do ever
They absolutely get your IP and probably some cookie data saved on your computer. Not sure about phones, those are privacy nightmares. I got tagged for trying to get around an IP ban on a sub, so they absolutely track that. Cleared all cookies and trackers, unplugged my modem for a few hours so my ISP would issue a new IP, and once I verified that I had a new IP I was able to use the sub under a different account.
I tried something similar and even waited not hours but months before I even attempted to log in. My account would be fine but the moment I post I get shadowbanned.
Same account? Sure. New account? I’m surprised.
There’s a reason why most of the people still there and ostensibly on the left are doomers. Reddit won’t tolerate anyone else. This also has the effect of encouraging more people to become doomers and not take any action.
That wont help, neither will a vpn or using a different device lol, I tried them all, think it has to be a different device youve never logged on before on a different network, i lost interest and just use lemmy now, reddit lowkey made me do stuff less, like id read more about my hobbies rather than doing them, like watching ppl game instead of gaming, but for any hobby
Thank you for informing me. I’ll take a look in ten years if they are still around.
In any case, I knew I would be banned eventually regardless so I just did as much agitating as possible until that point came.
I use iOS and that didnt stop me from making another account after I got banned. I have four burner accounts.
I have iCloud premium, using safari and burner mails I can make however many accounts I like!
I’m still on Reddit due to my RC hobby. The community here is too small
I have the same setup and they caught me within 24 hours. fuck em.
Nah thank you. Don’t wanna catch those nasty STDs.
My reddit account got a strike by an admin for describing the risks involved in traveling to the USA currently (abduction, torture for an undetermined amount of time). The appeal I made to that was accepted but it left a sour taste in my mouth.
Lucky you, you got handled by a moderator who wasn’t a raging Trump whore.
I got permabanned after a week long ban for “threatening violence” when I suggested that if a Trump was elected (it was in Oct24) started directley Aiding Russia in their invasion of Europe, that they’d probably end up with a dead president. I appealed and suggested that I wasn’t threatening anyone, and that whoever banned me, was politically biased and triggered. and they flipped out and perma’d me.
That’s pretty lenient, most people get permabans
Lemmy. The support group for burned reddit veterans.
We were there. We put in thousands of hours of work. Years of moderating. Free work. Content creators. People who commented. Voted. All that karma …
All gone cause you upvoted an anti trump or musk post. Or maybe you upvoted a photo of a tessler burning.
Maybe you didn’t think Luigi should get the death penalty.
Don’t worry brother. Upvote what you want. Be free with the rest of us.
Check out https://lemmy.world/c/iselonmuskdeadyet
I wonder if the reason is because 50501 started on Reddit and they are determined to not let it happen again.
They bent the knee. Hard.
Many many years and ass loads of karma…
But apparently LIKING posts can get you banned now. What a shit show.
It’s all a ploy to control what we think.
Ideas are powerful, that’s why they don’t want us to have any of our own.
Clearly they’re butthurt that you didn’t fellate Trump or Musk or some other such drain clog.
Reddit constantly pushing conservative to the front page was a sign
r/conservative is just a rebrand and refugee camp of r/thedonald , mildly adjusted to accept the new wave “conservatives” across the world, like Supporters of Fidesz (Hungary, Orban), RN (LePen, France), Canadian Maple MAGA, the Russian Mafia State and their blood drunk Nazi Z-Tards, and all of those Joe Rogan / Jordan Peterson / Ben Shapiro types.
Actual Conservatism is dead. its just Nazis and Fascists who hijacked the term for better brand imaging.
