Most of what we do here regarding AI is FOSS AI using community run or self-hosted generators. None of the corporate AI bullshit like you sometimes see elsewhere.

Regardless if you still don’t like it and don’t want to be part of it, then it’s no big deal, just block or ignore the communities which are dedicated to AI stuff. The only thing you really shouldn’t do in regards to that is Anti-AI trolling, like attacking people who do like it, or making bad-faith comparisons or accusations. If you don’t like it just don’t engage with it.

I find the technology interesting but AI as a social phenomenon has been abhorrent.

I think most of us here have a similar view. Plagiarism machine is accurate, but that’s what a Google search looks like to someone from 1985. Not that I don’t prefer getting linked to information sources rather than getting incoherent slop.

I’ve not hated using local image generation to mock up ideas or turn around a private joke meme with friends. I have hated every advertisement bombarding me with nonsense buzzwords and leaders at work not understanding the technology. But I’m not an artist or writer whose work is getting chewed into a machine that gets all the credit. And I’m not a woman who could be blackmailed (or at least be robbed of agency) by fake nudes. Machine learning is a power tool, unfortunately people are just bastards.

You’ll have no trouble blocking AI here. This instance federated with almost all others and leaves it up to you to block them how you want. I will say db0 is my favorite instance so far.

      Why is it your fav?

And I also don’t love how ai images go into all other communities here though but I prefer the piracy

For one it has a cool name, the mods here don’t cause much drama (that I know of), the users don’t brigade threads like with Hexbear, and piracy is celebrated unlike other websites. Ultimately I hope you find what you’re looking for even if it’s not this place

EDIT: Almost forgot. /0 doesn’t censor what you read like with lemmy.ml (e g. “bitch” reads as removed).

I’m still trying to wrap my mind around the enforced anonymity of up-votes and down-votes(and the seeming concensus that “this is a good thing”). Whether I can articulate all of my opinions or not, I definitely don’t care to take the time to do so with all of them, particularly when they’ve already been spelled out by others(yay up-votes). A stupid number is easier to ignore than a well-thought-out(or otherwise) wall-of-text, that spaws others.

Personally, I have no qualms about blocking someone over their up-votes and down-votes, and anonymizing, or disabling, either, just seems to make it easier for trash that can keep quiet to hide. Personally, I identify with Marjory, so I guess it evens out.

TL;DR: I’m all for giving (biggotted)trash the lowest-effort-possible ways to out themselves, provided the rest of us can act upon it.

… but y’all seem to have figured it out within the constraints of the Lemmy system, while I’m still reeling at the notion that this seems to be the best thing out there with any traction among the masses.

You can get a bunch of funny posts, the moderation is really good, people typically say what they think and aren’t cowed into saying what is expected and so I like to believe there is some version of free thought happening. I like it, it’s been a good experience. Yeah I blocked all the random stuff that I didn’t like and it wasn’t a problem. Any instance you choose is going to have something that you find obnoxious for whatever reason and you’re going to have to block those communities. Additionally you’re going to encounter some random instance that you find obnoxious at the instance level and you can block the entire instance.

You’re fine. Generally the instance is anti-copyright, so arguments against AI or piracy based on copyrights tend to fall flat. At the same time, we also hate the corporate GenAI and the overinflated hype around it. We support GenAI only when it’s done via FOSS and without relying on vulture capitalism.

I just ask you don’t go around scolding people about using GenAI in this instance as it becomes tiring. Just block the GenAI comms.

  • Just block the communities you don’t want to see. That is the power you have. Use it wisely.

I for one very much Enjoy reading up on AI stuff I’m visually impaired and use AI pretty much daily to read images and memes For me it’s been a game changer

Block what you don’t like to see. Block users who you don’t like. Doesn’t matter which instance you’re on.

I like AI because of my leftist politics but as long as you don’t hate minorities or the poor or plan to constantly beef with anarchists, leftists and progressives from a conservative perspective in general I’d have no issue with you.

I upvoted that comment, but I’m right there with you in wanting it spelled out by that particular user. Personally, I see AI as the beginnings of a future generation of person, and I despise Copyright profiteering by middle-men.

Doesn’t mean I’m okay with all of the resources getting wasted on it, the damage to the environment, or those people going un-paid for their existing body of work, nor those who will be unable to make a living through creative works in the future, because of AI.

1)Copyright is mafia protection for corpos

        2)Corpos bad

        3)Copyright infringement good

4)Image-gen AI allows working class masses who can’t spec into drawing or any other skills that don’t guarantee jobs to infringe copyright en-masse with art.

        5)Image-gen AI good.

Okay I see. However I would counter that the environmental, social, socioeconomic, and other side effects of AI are more than enough to offset the good done by the image generating parts of AI. Not that I think your argument is invalid, just not really worth it to me. And I most definitely do not think supporting AI is an inherently leftist viewpoint.

Sure, I agree, corpo AIs are awful, but it’s not the tech, it’s who has it that’s the issue. I’m not simping for altrightman and his gippity, I’m only for open source locally run AI models like StableDiffusion or Mistral7B.

As long as you don’t have a fundamental problem with the tech because it erodes the human spirit of creativity or some dumb shit then we’re in agreement.
