    A few bad things in code for which we have fairly consistent evidence:

    • high nesting depth
    • meaningless or single-letter variable names
    • lots of code duplication
    • very inconsistent formatting
    • very complicated Boolean conditions with AND and OR
    • functions with a lot of parameters
