New OLED screen. New APU. And lots of small hardware improvements.
Just when the competition in the handheld space was ramping up, Valve comes back to dunk on them again.
It’s pretty awesome that they also cut the price on the old model. The $400 LCD version now comes with a 256gb NVME SSD rather than the slow eMMC it came with.
Holy shit, now that’s an upgrade.
And don’t forget you also have the option to go refurbished if you want to save some money!
And if somebody wants cheaper they sell the older versions cheaper the 64 for $349.
Which if you don’t plan to open it doesn’t make sense, just go for the 256Gb you said but if you plan to replace the SSD on arrival is a much better idea.
Would there be any reason for anyone, like myself, who doesn’t already own a steam deck to not get an OLED model? I’m definitely interested.
$150 cheaper.
Edit: And less likely to develop screen burn-in at some point in the future.
They’re lowering the cost of the remaining LCD models
Depending on when you pull the trigger, 2/3 of your options will be OLED anyway.
They’re phasing out the original LCD 64 and 512 models and only retaining the 256 LCD. The new lineup is 256 LCD, 512 OLED, and 1TB OLED. Permanent price cuts are in effect for the 64 and the 512 LCD until they run out of stock.
Oh god damnit. I could have gotten a much better one
The cheapest 64GB one on clearance is a steal, just stick your own m.2 in there later
Ah you ça change the data storage easily? Hmmmm thanks for pointing this out.
This is alll I ever wanted from steam deck. Time to put my money where my mouth is
Man, and I only just got mine… And considering the insides are all changed, I doubt I can simply upgrade my current one by switching out the screen and battery.
They confirmed you can’t swap the screen, but if you want a rebate on the purchase price difference hit up Support
Kind of salty that my deck is only a few months old and I totally would’ve waited for this.
Well yeah but you always know with hardware generations that there’s an updated generation down the line, so that’s hardly unexpected, is it?
Could still sell yours and buy this one.
True but they specifically said a new deck was a few years out.
Is the wifi chip upgraded?
Yeah, they’ve added 6GHz.
And separated out the Bluetooth antenna from the WiFi
#1 seller for me is the fact that the bumpers are better replaceable cause they’re attached to the joystick board not the button board. That was the ibiggest pain for me cause when they stopped working on my first deck I had to send it in, and they gave me a new one wiping out all the software customizing I had done. I can feel the bumper going on my current deck a few months ago, it only works if you press it a certain way and one small jostle could make it stop entirely again and I’ll need to RMA AGAIN.
OLED is a really nice upgade, especially given the original screen being not so great.
Still not sure if it’s something I can afford anytime soon, but would be a pretty nice device to have around for sure.
Yeah… Although another big win is any efficient improvements by the new APU revision of 6nm and the bigger battery. That said… We will have to see people testing how big is the difference in games.
Let me guess, only available for North Americans and maybe East Asia as usual. Fuck the rest of the planet, am I right?
* cries in south hemisphere *
I can understand frustration with a product not being available in your region, but wouldn’t the anger be better directed at the transportation companies pricing up int’l trade and governments with import taxes and such? I don’t totally understand the general sentiment that companies should sell products at a loss just to get it everywhere.
I’m not trying to defend companies or anything, I just never understand why they’re the first to blame.
I know this is unrelated to the post, but honestly I’m just frustrated whenever Steam sends or shows anything related to the Steam Deck to me. If I click on the damn link they show me it’s “lol you ain’t in the US, get fucked bozo, better luck next life”. Like, why even bother showing me ads? I can’t buy the damn thing and all it does is make me bitter.
should sell products at a loss just to get it everywhere.
Why to a loss? They should just sell it everywhere.
They don’t have a choice for some countries. If the item costs more to ship to somewhere and inport than it does to make it, then by selling the item they are losing money and it makes no sense to sell.
It is written that the APU on the OLED model is 6nm and on the old one is 7nm but all performance numbers are the same including power consumption, am I missing anything?
Not sure what you’re seeing with regard to the power consumption, but it specifically mentions that the APU is more efficient (which tracks with the die shrink). Between that, the OLED display, and a bigger battery going in, the system should last longer on a charge while performance remains the same.
Yes, read the review of the Verge and it seems that it is slightly more power efficient and runs cooler, so this would help with GPU stuttering to some extent.
I was just checking the specs on Valve’s website. And they had listed the APU consumption and the numbers were exactly the same, which led to my confusion.
I guess the screen is absolutely gorgeous too. I was planning to upgrade my GPU next year and buy the 4070 Ti Super both for gaming and productivity but now I am feeling a bit unsure about it.
The power consumption is probably the peak power usage
Wow another insane update from valve!
I want this so much… maybe next year.
With a display almost as good as 2011 phones.
